  Have Mercy
  (by Terry Hollahan)

Out in the garden underneath forbidden trees
We close our eyes and ears and do just what we please
And in the morning you’ll find us back again
Down by the riverside to wash away our sins

Have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy on our souls
Have mercy, have mercy
We forget what we’re told

Out where the fields are green and the streets are paved with gold
They tell us it’s okay to grab all you can hold
And when we lose our grip you’ll find us on our way
Down to the riverside to throw it all away

Have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy on us all
Have mercy, have mercy
Our backs are to the wall

Out of the darkness we walk with heads held high
And put our blinders on to shield us from the sky
In our confusion we wander now and then
Down to the riverside to throw each other in

Have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy on our souls
Have mercy, have mercy
We forget what we’re told

Have mercy, have mercy
Have mercy on us all
Have mercy, have mercy
Our backs are to the wall
